Dear Riverside… Please Don’t Crash Today

Written by:

Every podcast editor has whispered this prayer at least once:

“Riverside, please don’t crash today.”

Remote recording platforms are incredible; they let us interview people across the world, capture high-quality audio, and make podcasting accessible to anyone with a laptop and a quiet room.

But sometimes… they test our patience.

A guest’s internet drops.
A file won’t upload.
Someone forgets to click “record.”
Or the platform freezes right at the best part of the episode.

It’s the modern version of holding your breath during a live radio broadcast.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Problems will happen. Always. What matters is preparation.

If you want smoother recordings:

  • Ask guests to use Chrome
  • Tell them to close extra tabs
  • Do a 30-second test recording
  • Encourage wired internet when possible
  • Have a backup recording running

When you prepare for the worst, the recording usually goes smoother. When you don’t… well, you learn quickly.

And yes, some days I still look at Riverside and whisper, “Please behave.”
